Packing your suitcase for a 5-day trip is already hectic, but packing for university is another level of stress. Imagine ‘squeezing’ your whole life into 3 large suitcases and 1 box (well at least that's how it was for me). So it is important to know what to pack, and more crucially what NOT to pack for your university journey. So these are some wee tips from me, a girl who had to sit on her suitcases for uni to be able to close them, to you, who would probably want to avoid that!
All The Clothes You Own
This is unquestionably one of the most frequent pieces of advice you will hear from current students - that is to not bring so many clothes with you. If it’s not something you typically wear every day, there’s a low chance you will wear it in university. Since you'll likely end up purchasing additional clothing here, packing more than you'll need will take up a lot of space and add weight to your bag. The best strategy is to browse through your closet and pick the items you can make more than three outfits from and fight the urge to bring the rest.
Stationeries
The majority of the course materials at the university, including the lecture slides, and even your work and assignments are available online. Additionally, most teachers may go through the slides rapidly in lectures, so it's just more practical to type it out on your laptop or other devices. However, this does not apply to everyone, if note-taking on notebooks and paper is your thing, keep doing it! This does not exclude you from bringing any of your supplies; just make sure they don't take up too much room in your luggage.
Candles
This may be oddly specific, but yes it is not recommended to bring candles with you if you are going to live in the university accommodation. Most dorms will not allow you to have burning candles in your room because the smoke detectors are very sensitive.
Large Kitchen Appliances
Big kitchen appliances like rice cookers, blenders, and air fryers can be bulky to bring, and you can find most of them in the country you’re staying in so don’t worry. Moreover, buying it in the country you’re going to study in reduces the need to use the adapter every time you use those appliances.
Excessive Amount of Cash
Cash can help you in an emergency, but carrying around too much can be risky. A lot of places in the UK now allow card payment so don’t worry about that too much! Bring a reasonable amount with you just in case anything happens with your cards and that should do you good.
