Extracurricular activities to enhance your experience as a School of Business student
Enriching Your School of Business Journey
'Business is the easiest course out there' is a common misconception. Many people tend to underestimate the rigor of business modules, perceiving them as requiring less effort compared to other subjects. However, as a student in the School of Business, I would respectfully disagree with this notion. The study materials are highly practical and closely aligned with real-life events, which is why they appear so relatable. Business and economics are everywhere in our everyday life and that’s why as a school of business students, it’s important not only to study the theory but also to know how to apply it in real life. Here are a few extracurricular activities you can do as a School of Business student to enhance your studying experience.
Business/Case Competition
This is the easiest and most practical way we can apply our studies to the world’s problems. These competitions can be found on various websites, on social media such as Facebook, or in our university. Yes, our university has a business competition every year to seek students with entrepreneurship and employability skills. Universities Business Challenge (UBC) is a competition for undergraduate students which gives you and your team a chance to work as the board of directors for a simulated company. There is also an Enterprise competition open to undergraduates, postgraduates, staff members, and recent graduates. I believe that this would be a great chance for any students to learn something new and it will look great on your CV too!
Societies
This may seem a bit overlooked as of course every student knows about societies. But what makes them different when it comes to enhancing our journey as a School of Business student? Leadership. Yes, companies are always seeking out individuals who have a strong sense of leadership and that can be shown through your university extracurriculars. Being a president or vice president for a society you’re in can be a great way to start! It can also give you a lot of experience as a leader but at the same time not as stressful as a professional environment.
Volunteering
Life is about taking and giving back and volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they just have the heart. Okay, that’s enough of life quotes that I found on the Internet, back to the real stuff. Volunteering can actually give you a lot of lessons and experiences that can’t be taught behind those 4 walls. It can give you an idea of the community, and how to work with people. There are always a bunch of volunteering positions you can apply for, both in the university, such as being a volunteer for DUSA, and in Dundee. You can look for these on the career service website of our university.
Internship
Probably one of the most common pieces of advice I’ve heard from people around me about what to do during uni is to go for an internship. Internships are the closest we can get as a student to the workforce out there. Although with no salary, I think the amount of knowledge and experience we get from it is worth even more than that. It’s also a good way to test if you actually like to work in the field you’re studying or not because sometimes theory and practice are a bit different. Our university actually does have an internship course where you can apply for and do your internship in companies recommended by the university during the year. I would definitely recommend you check that out!
And these are some of the extracurriculars you can join to enhance your journey as a business student at the University of Dundee. I’m sure with these activities, you will be able to apply what you learnt to the real world and understand much more about the field you are doing. Thank you so much for reading it up until now!
