Adapting to a new city and a whole new country can be overwhelming to say the least. Trying to navigate your studies, finding accommodation, making friends, finding part-time jobs can be challenging while trying to fit into a completely different culture. To make your settling in a tad bit easier, I have put together a list of apps that you will find useful as a student at the University of Dundee.
1. University Apps
Seats
You can use Seats to note your attendance virtually every time you have an online or offline class.
Blackboard
This gives you information on your modules and any course announcements. Also you can listen to class recordings or attend a lecture on your phone.
UoD
You can access your timetable here and book library rooms for group projects among other things.
Outlook (University email)
It’s important to stay updated as a student, especially when you get those last minute emails, so make sure to download this one.
Microsoft Teams
Useful for online meetings when you don’t have your laptop or for networking with peers.
2. Travel/Transport
Xplore Dundee
You can buy bus tickets on this app to travel around Dundee. They have discounted prices for students. Also when you buy a ticket in the bus, always remember to mention you are a student to get a discounted price.
Dundee city taxis
Dundee does not have Uber sadly but this is the next best thing. This is an app similar to Uber and taxis normally arrive within 10 minutes.
Railcard
If you want to travel by train, apply for a railcard if you are below the age of 30. The price is significantly reduced and you reach places faster!
Trainline
This is another handy train app that lets you check train timings, prices, and book tickets.
3. Organisation
Fudget
As students, we know how important it is to budget. This app is great to monitor your spending.
Notion
Amazing app to organise student life; you can create timetables on it, create travel plans, split your bills with roommates and a lot more! If you are creative and like organising, you would definitely want to download this one.
Miro
Miro is another great app especially if you are working in groups. It is an online visual collaborative whiteboard platform to create flowcharts, mind maps, etc.
4. Shopping
UNiDAYS & Student Beans
Both apps are popular student discount apps. You just need to verify your student ID on the app and start receiving exclusive student discounts. You can also show your student ID in most shops for a discount so always ask before making a purchase.
Deliveroo & Just Eat
For those late night cravings or when you don’t feel like stepping out of the house, Dundee has some great options for takeaway and/or groceries. There are also apps like Tesco groceries if you want to do a bigger shop.
Trolley
Trolley lets you compare item prices at different shops so you can buy the specific item at the lowest price possible. Great, right?
5. Entertainment/Activities
Eventbrite
Keep yourself entertained and informed by registering for events on Eventbrite and meet new people. Eventbrite has a number of events you can attend in and around Dundee.
ISE
Institute of sports and exercise has their own app. They are located on campus so you must have heard of them already. If you have a membership, you can check sports schedule and book courts on their app. If you don’t have a membership you can still book courts by paying a small fee.
The Courier - Dundee
It’s good sense to know what is happening around the city you live in - especially if you are new to Dundee. This one is specifically for news around Dundee.
Friends International
A safe space to meet with other international students and make friends. They host several events throughout the year. Go make some new buddies!
6. Jobs and Professional networking
Indeed
Great app to find part-time roles if you want to work while studying. But remember not to work more than 20 hours/week if you are a full-time international student.
LinkedIn
You are probably not a stranger to LinkedIn but take this as a reminder to update your profile, start thinking about graduate roles and getting in touch with people from your industry and expanding your network.
Glassdoor
This one’s great for providing insights into a company’s work environment - you will find reviews from previous employees and sample interview questions.
7. Accommodation
Spareroom
If you are looking to move in with someone or want a flat mate to rent a room in your flat, this is the app for you. You can find roommates and accommodation on this app with ease.
Zoopla
This is great for browsing flats anywhere in the UK. It is one of the most well reviewed sites.
8. Utilities
Circuit Laundry
If you are living in student accommodation, you will need this app to pay for your laundry and keep an eye on your washing.
Giffgaff
This is an easy-to-use mobile service provider with affordable packages. I’ve used it for 6 years and have no complaints yet!
Hope these apps are helpful! Do you know of any apps your peers might benefit from? Comment them down below.
